Dutch scholar of Islam and Orientalism. He lived in Arabia for several years and published his magnum opus Mecca (1888-89), then went to Indonesia where he continued his Islamic studies until 1906. During this time he wrote De Atjehers (1993-94), which pointed out the errors in Dutch policy during the Aceh War and contributed to its end. In 1906 he became a professor at Leiden University and provided a great deal of advice on colonial policy as an advisor on Indonesian affairs.

オランダのイスラム学者，東洋学者。アラビアに数年間滞在して大著『メッカ』 Mekka (1888～89) を出版し，さらにインドネシアに行って 1906年までイスラム研究を続けた。この間に著わした『アチェ人』 De Atjehers (93～94) はアチェ戦争におけるオランダの政策の誤りを指摘し，その終結に貢献した。 06年にライデン大学教授に就任し，またインドネシア問題顧問として植民政策に多くの助言をした。
