Sumithion (English spelling)

Organophosphate insecticide (organophosphate preparation). A registered trademark of Sumitomo Chemical, its common names include fenitrothion and MEP. It was developed to have the same insecticidal power as parathion but with low toxicity to mammals. It is said to have about 1/100th the toxicity of parathion. Chemical name: 4-nitro- m -tolyldimethylphosphorothioate. It is a liquid with a boiling point of 140℃/0.1mmHg, insoluble in water, and stable in alkali. It is widely used against rice pests such as the rice borer, as well as pests of fruit trees and vegetables.

有機リン殺虫剤（有機リン製剤）。住友化学の登録商標で，一般名はフェニトロチオン，MEPなど。パラチオンのような殺虫力があり哺乳動物に対する毒性の弱い殺虫剤を目指して開発された。パラチオンの約 100分の1の毒性といわれる。化学名 4-ニトロ- m -トリルジメチルホスホロチオエート。沸点 140℃/0.1mmHgの液体で水に不溶，アルカリに安定。二化めい虫など稲作害虫のほか，果樹，蔬菜の害虫などに広く用いられている。
