Glass laser - Glass laser (English spelling)

A type of solid-state laser, it is made of active ions that act as the active center responsible for amplifying light, and a colorless mother glass that melts them evenly. Those containing neodymium as the active ion emit near-infrared light. Since large lasers can be easily made, high-power glass lasers are expected to trigger the generation of the ultra-high temperatures and pressures required for nuclear fusion. On the other hand, small ones for medical use are also being made because they are easy to mold. The efficiency is maximized when the concentration of neodymium oxide in the glass is 3 to 4%, and the mother glass should have a low refractive index so that it is less likely to be damaged when high power is generated. In addition, glass fibers containing various rare earth ions such as erbium, praseodymium, and ytterbium have been developed and are used in the field of optical communications and as lasers for various processing applications.

固体レーザーの一種で、光の増幅を担当する活性中心となる活性イオンと、それを均一に溶かし込む無色の母体ガラスからできている。活性イオンとしてネオジムを含むものは近赤外線を放出する。大型のものが容易にできるので、核融合に必要な超高温、超高圧発生の引き金に高出力ガラスレーザーが有望視されている。一方、成形が容易なことから小型の医療用のものもつくられている。ガラスに対する酸化ネオジムの濃度が3～4％で効率は最大となり、また母体ガラスとしては大出力発生時に損傷を受けにくい低屈折率のものが適している。この他に、エルビウム、プラセオジム、イッテルビウムなどのさまざまな希土類イオンを含むグラスファイバーが開発され、光通信の分野において、また各種の加工用レーザーとして使われている。
