Chain Moss

Japanese: クサリゴケ

A general term for mosses in the family Jubulaceae (= Lejeuneaceae). They are distributed widely throughout the world, but many species and genera have differentiated, especially in the tropics. They have the largest number of genera and species of any family of mosses, with about 80 genera and 1,500 species known worldwide, and about 25 genera and 100 species recorded in Japan. They generally grow on tree trunks, but there are also foliar mosses, such as Cololejeunea and Leptolejeunea , that grow on the leaves of ferns and evergreen trees.
