Khiva (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒバ(英語表記)Khiva
Khiva (English spelling)
A city in the Khorezm region of western Uzbekistan. It is located on the left bank of the lower Amu Darya River, about 30 km southwest of the provincial capital Urgench, overlooking the Parvan Canal. It has existed since the 6th or 7th century, but records date back to the 10th century, and it became the capital of the Khiva Khanate in the early 17th century. In 1873 it became a Russian protectorate, and in 1920 the Khorezm People's Republic was established here, with Khiva as its capital. In 1924 it was incorporated into the Uzbek Republic and lost its political importance. Itchan-Kala, an old town with a royal palace, mosques, caravanserai (caravan accommodation), and other buildings, was registered as a cultural heritage site of the World Heritage Sites in 1990. It is said to have the most intact old townscape of any city in Central Asia, and is focusing on the development of the tourism industry. It has a textile industry (cotton, carpets, sewing). It has a population of 41,300 (estimated 1991).
