A smile-like expression seen on the mouth of Greek Archaic sculptures. It is also called an archaic smile or an archaic smile. It is not very noticeable in early sculptures, but it becomes particularly clear in statues of young men (kouros) and young women (kore) from the mid- to late 6th century BC, and gradually disappears from the beginning of the 5th century BC when the Strict Style (Greek art) shifts. The meaning of this smile has been variously interpreted, including ``a reflection of the Greeks' simple joy in life,'' ``an expression of the god's (statue's) goodwill toward humans,'' ``a stylized expression created by chance by an unskilled sculptor,'' and ``an expression of the ancients' belief in the magical power of smiles.''
