…It can also be translated as “Green People.” The Green Party, led by Petra Karin Kelly (1947-92) and others, won more than 5% of the votes in the March 1983 federal election, and entered national politics for the first time. Since 1977, based on anti-nuclear protests at sites planned for nuclear power plants and nuclear fuel reprocessing plants throughout West Germany, the Green Party has won seats in local parliaments one after another, and in January 1980, the national Green Party organization was formed in Karlsruhe.
