Wenqing - Wenqing

Japanese: 文清 - ぶんせい

Years of birth: unknown. A painter from the mid-Muromachi period. His existence is known from several works bearing the "Bunsei" seal, but there are no historical documents that indicate his deeds. Based on the "Portrait of Yoso Soi" (1452, Daitokuji Temple), with a self-commentary by Yoso Soi of Daitokuji, and the "Portrait of Vimalakirti" (1457, Yamato Bunkakan Museum), with a commentary by Sonseizu Mok, it is assumed that he was a painter with ties to Daitokuji who was active in the mid-15th century. "Portrait of Vimalakirti" is a masterpiece among Taoist and Buddhist paintings of the Muromachi period. Other works include "Landscape Painting" (Masaki Museum of Art) and "Landscape Painting" (Boston Museum of Fine Arts, USA), with commentary by Ichijo Kaneyoshi and Zuikei Shuho, which show that he was a painter with a unique style while following the tradition of Shubun. There is a theory that he is the same artist as the artist with the "Bunsei Gaishi" seal, or that he was a painter who came from Korea, but these are unlikely. <References> "Zenrin Gasan" edited by the Mainichi Shimbun Company

室町中期の画家。「文清」印を押す数点の作品からその存在が知られるが,事跡を示す史料はない。大徳寺養叟宗頤自賛の「養叟宗頤像」(1452,大徳寺蔵),存畊祖黙賛「維摩居士像」(1457,大和文華館蔵)により,15世紀中ごろに活躍した大徳寺にゆかりのある画家と推測される。「維摩居士像」は室町期の道釈画中白眉の作である。ほかに一条兼良・瑞渓周鳳賛「山水図」(正木美術館蔵),「山水図」(米・ボストン美術館蔵)などがあり,周文の系統を引きながらも個性的な作風の画家であることがわかる。「文成外史」印の画家との同一人説,あるいは朝鮮から渡来した画家とする説もあるが,可能性は薄い。<参考文献>毎日新聞社編『禅林画賛』
