Bishop Štrosmajer of Żakovo (1815-1905) founded the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1867, helped to open a university in 1874, and in 1884 established an art gallery attached to the academy with his own collection. With the development of the railway network in the 20th century, industry and commerce also flourished. During World War II, Zagreb was the capital of the Nazi and Fascist puppet "Independent State of Croatia," which allowed it to avoid destruction by the Nazis and played an important role in the reconstruction of the country's economy after the war. …
