Hiba (Japanese cypress) - Thujopsis dolabrata Sieb.et Zucc.var.hondae Makino
Also called Hinoki Asunaro (illustration). It is a variety of Asunaro and looks similar to Asunaro, but the tips of the scales do not protrude like horns, so the cones are slightly spherical, and the scale leaves are also slightly smaller. It is distributed from Mount Horyu at the northern tip of Noto Peninsula and northern Kanto, north to the base of Oshima Peninsula. The Hiba forests of Shimokita and Tsugaru Peninsulas in Aomori Prefecture are pure forests and are counted among Japan's three most beautiful forests. In Noto, ate forestry has been practiced since ancient times for the purpose of producing wood for Wajima lacquerware. It is a special afforestation method in which Hiba cuttings or cuttings are planted under cedar forests.
