A former town in Nakakanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Located along the Shinano River, it flourished as a river port and market town in the early modern period, and since the end of the Edo period has been known for its cotton fabric known as "Kosudojima." Currently, knitwear manufacturing is thriving. Bulbs such as tulips and vegetables are also cultivated. The Shinetsu Main Line runs through the town. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Niigata City along with Niitsu City, Shirane City, Toyosaka City, Yokogoshi Town and Kameda Town in Nakakanbara County, and Iwamuro Village, Nishikawa Town, Aikata Village, Katahigashi Village, Tsukigata Village, and Nakanokuchi Village in Nishikanbara County. 新潟県中部,中蒲原(なかかんばら)郡の旧町。信濃川に沿い,近世河港,市場町として栄え,幕末以後〈小須戸縞(じま)〉と呼ぶ綿織物を特産,現在はニットの製造が盛ん。チューリップなどの球根,野菜も栽培。信越本線が通じる。2005年3月新津市,白根市,豊栄市,中蒲原郡横越町,亀田町,西蒲原郡岩室村,西川町,味方村,潟東村,月潟村,中之口村と新潟市へ編入。16.91km2。1万576人(2003)。
