These fossil human bones were discovered in a cave in a quarry in Hamakita City, Shizuoka Prefecture (now Hamamatsu City) between 1960 and 1962. They were excavated from two layers of rock, one above the other, along with animal bones. Radiocarbon dating showed that the upper layer was approximately 14,000 years old, and the lower layer approximately 18,000 years old, making it clear that both are human bones from the late Pleistocene epoch.
