French painter. Born in Granville. From the age of 17, he studied at the Académie Julian and then at the École des Beaux-Arts. His first exhibition was in the Salon in 1890. He participated in the formation of the Nabis, centered around Sérusier, who had learned from Gauguin at Pont-Aven. Although he was still young, Denis soon became a leading figure in the group, and in 1890 he proclaimed a theory that would become the basic direction of modern painting: "Let us recall that a painting is, before it is a war horse, a nude woman, or some kind of anecdote, essentially a flat surface covered with colors arranged in a certain order" (Arts et Critiques magazine). Simplified forms, a system of Art Nouveau-style curves, mild colors, and idealistic themes characterize his work from the 1990s to the early 20th century. In 1912, he painted the ceiling of the Champs-Élysées Theater, but from the following year he devoted himself to religious painting, and in 1919 he founded the Arts Sacrée workshop with Devallières. He created many decorative murals and illustrations, and also wrote books such as "Theory of Painting" (1912) and "History of Religious Art" (1939). Other representative works include "Homage to Cézanne" (1900, National Museum of Modern Art, Paris). He died in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
