Winnebago Tribe - Winnebago (English spelling)
A Siouan-speaking American Indian tribe living in Wisconsin and Nebraska in the United States. They first made contact with Europeans in the early 17th century, when they lived in Wisconsin, but in the mid-17th century spread westward as a result of the trade in fur products. They made a living by settling down and cultivating corn and beans, and by hunting wild buffalo. Their society consisted of two clans, each consisting of an exogamous clan. In 1865, the U.S. government forced them to settle on a designated reservation in Nebraska, but many resisted, and in 1875 they were allowed to have a designated reservation in Wisconsin as well. Because of their shared ancestry, there is frequent travel between the two groups, and the total population, including those outside the reservation, is estimated at about 2,000.
