Touensou - Touensou

Japanese: トウエンソウ - とうえんそう

A plant of the family Acanthaceae, with about 200 species distributed in warm regions of the world. Some are annual plants, but most are perennial, and similar to plants of the grass and sedge families, linear leaves grow from short rhizomes. Flower stalks emerge from between the leaves, and flowers surrounded by scale-like bracts grow at the top of the stalks in a head-like spike-like inflorescence. The flowers are usually yellow, but occasionally white, and have three identical petals. The ovary is three-lobed, and the fruit is a capsule. It is a sun-loving plant that grows in wetlands and sometimes in acidic, nutrient-poor soils of silica sand.
