(1) A 1,2-glycol in which the 1st and 2nd carbon atoms are both tertiary carbon atoms. These carbon atoms may be linked to an alkyl or aryl group, or may be connected in a ring via several carbon atoms. In the past, it was written as pinacon. When a ketone is reduced with magnesium amalgam or sodium amalgam, two molecules of this compound combine to form pinacolone. Pinacol undergoes an intramolecular rearrangement with inorganic acids to form pinacolone. This is called the pinacol rearrangement. (2) Tetramethylethylene glycol C 6 H 14 O 2. It is produced by the reduction of acetone, and when oxidized, it produces two molecules of ketone. It is the simplest pinacol, forming plate-like crystals. Its melting point is 45°C (with six molecules of water of crystallization) and 38°C (when recrystallized from ether). It dissolves in hot water and ethyl alcohol.
