Junichiro Kido

...A politician from the end of the Edo period and the early Meiji period. Along with Okubo Toshimichi and Saigo Takamori, he is known as one of the three great men of the Meiji Restoration. He was from the Choshu domain. He first went by the name Katsura Kogoro, then Kido Kanji, then Junichiro, and later Takayoshi, and changed his name to Shogiku. In 1849 (Kaei 2), he became a disciple of Yoshida Shoin, and in 1852 he went to Edo to study at Saito Yakuro's school. He eventually joined the Sonno Joi movement, and in 1860 (Man'en 1), immediately after the assassination of Ii Tairo, he formed the Heitatsumaru Covenant with Mito domain samurai Nishimaru Tatewaki and others. During the height of the Sonno Joi movement, he came into contact with people from various domains as a representative of the Choshu domain, and became widely known. ...
