Junichiro Kido

...A politician from the end of the Edo period and the early Meiji period. Along with Okubo Toshimichi and Saigo Takamori, he is known as one of the three great men of the Meiji Restoration. He was from the Choshu domain. He first went by the name Katsura Kogoro, then Kido Kanji, then Junichiro, and later Takayoshi, and changed his name to Shogiku. In 1849 (Kaei 2), he became a disciple of Yoshida Shoin, and in 1852 he went to Edo to study at Saito Yakuro's school. He eventually joined the Sonno Joi movement, and in 1860 (Man'en 1), immediately after the assassination of Ii Tairo, he formed the Heitatsumaru Covenant with Mito domain samurai Nishimaru Tatewaki and others. During the height of the Sonno Joi movement, he came into contact with people from various domains as a representative of the Choshu domain, and became widely known. ...

…幕末･明治初期の政治家。大久保利通，西郷隆盛とともに明治維新の三傑と称される。長州藩出身。初め桂小五郎のち木戸貫治ついで準一郎，孝允と改名，号は松菊。1849年(嘉永2)吉田松陰の門下となり，52年江戸に出て斎藤弥九郎の塾で修業。やがて尊王攘夷運動に参加し，60年(万延1)井伊大老暗殺直後に水戸藩士西丸帯刀（たてわき）らと丙辰丸盟約を結んだ。尊王攘夷運動の隆盛期に長州藩を代表して諸藩人士と接触，ひろく知られるようになった。…
