Abbreviation for Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It is an e-mail security technology that certifies the validity of a public key by a "certificate" issued by a certification authority (CA). Using S/MIME, you can protect your e-mail from threats such as eavesdropping, tampering, and spoofing. To use it, you must first install the public key of a "root certification authority" into your e-mail software that supports S/MIME. The root certification authority is generally considered trustworthy, so the e-mail software checks whether the public key certificate of the subordinate certification authority issued by the root certification authority is correct. If it is confirmed that the public key certificate of the subordinate certification authority is correct, the recipient can be determined to be legitimate. The system is designed to confirm that the public key belongs to a legitimate owner by tracing the relationship of certification authorities with the root certification authority at the top. Major e-mail clients such as Outlook Express support it, but to use it, you need to purchase an electronic certificate from a company that has a certification authority such as Verisign.

Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensionsの略。電子メール用セキュリティ技術で、認証局（CA）が発行する「証明書」によって公開鍵の正当性を証明する。S/MIMEを利用することで、盗聴や改ざん、なりすましといった脅威からメールを守れる。利用するには、S/MIMEに対応するメールソフトにあらかじめ「ルート認証局」の公開鍵をインストールしておく。ルート認証局は世間一般に信頼できるとみなすことで、メールソフトはルート認証局が発行した下位認証局の公開鍵証明書が正しいかを確認する。下位認証局の公開鍵証明書が正しいと確認できれば、その相手先は正当であると判断できる。ルート認証局を頂点とする認証局の関係をたどっていくことで、正当な持ち主の公開鍵であることを確認するという仕組みになっている。Outlook Expressなど代表的なメールクライアントが対応しているが、利用にあたってはベリサインなどの認証局を持つ企業から電子証明書を購入する必要がある。
