History of Shimazu

Japanese: 島津国史 - しまづこくし

A chronological history of the three provinces of Satsuma, Osumi, and Hyuga, with a focus on the Shimazu clan. 32 volumes. Published in 1802. The chief editor was Yamamoto Masayoshi, a professor at the Zoushikan in Kagoshima Domain, and compiled by order of the domain's lord, Shimazu Shigehide, based on historical materials collected and compiled at the domain's records office, such as the "New Edition of the Shimazu Clan's Genroku Legitimate Genealogy," and Koriyama Sonshi's "Shimazu Family." The sources of the descriptions are also shown, making it a basic source for research on the Shimazu clan and the Kagoshima Domain. Ten volumes have been published in Japanese binding and a combined Western-bound reprint.

島津氏を中心にした薩摩・大隅・日向３ヵ国の編年史。32巻。1802年成立。編纂主任は鹿児島藩の造士(ぞうし)館教授山本正誼(まさよし)で，藩主島津重豪(しげひで)の命により，《新編島津氏世禄正統系図》など藩記録所で収集・編纂した史料集や郡山遜志(こおりやまそんし)の《島津世家(しまづせいか)》などをもとに編纂された。記述の典拠も示されており，島津氏や鹿児島藩研究の基本史料とされる。和装本10冊および合冊復刻洋装本が刊行されている。
