A trend in German literature, mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries. It has its origins in medieval farces and S. Brand's satirical moral poem The Ship of Fools (1494). This work, which ridicules human stupidity from a humanistic point of view, was widely read, and Geiller von Kaysersberg used it as a basis for his sermons, and Erasmus wrote The Praise of Folly (1509). T. Murner also wrote The Calling of Fools (12) and Luther's Great Fool (22). A later masterpiece is Abraham a Sancta Clara's Judas der Ertzschelm (1686). It is said that the existence of court jesters also played a major role in the rise of fool literature.
