…The title of marquis, intermediate between duke and count, was originally derived from the Frankish margraves (German: Markgraf) who were entrusted with governing the borderlands between different tribes, and often bore the title of duke because of its military importance, but later became a title of feudal nobility unrelated to this historical origin. In Spain and Portugal, this title (marques) was frequently given to powerful nobles from the 14th and 15th centuries onwards. In general, after the High Middle Ages when the feudal monarchy was established, these titles were awarded by the king and served to organize the political order through the distribution of honor represented by the titles, but before that, local powerful families often bore the appropriate titles themselves based on their military and political strength. …
