Year of death: 36th year of the reign of Empress Suiko (628) Year of birth: Unknown A powerful Soga clan leader in the first half of the 7th century. Father of Kezu and Aya. Uncle of Soga no Emishi. Possibly the son of Iname and the younger brother of Umako. Also written as Soga no Sakaibe no Omi. In the 8th year of the reign of Empress Suiko (600), he was appointed as the shogun dispatched to Mimana. In the 20th year of the same year, when Empress Suiko's birth mother, Soga no Katashiohime (Iname's daughter), was reburied in the tomb of Emperor Kinmei, Umako led many sub-tribes and represented the clan, while Marise is said to have eulogized the "original clan name" and was second in rank to Umako within the Soga clan. In the 36th year of the same year, when the emperor died without appointing a successor, Soga no Emishi gathered his ministers to discuss matters, but Marise supported Prince Yamashiro no Oe (son of Prince Shotoku) and was at odds with Emishi, who supported Prince Tamura (later Emperor Jomei). Even when the family constructed the tomb of Umako, he destroyed the hut at the tomb and retreated alone to live in the palace of King Totsuka (King Totsuka Naka) in Ikaruga, but when he returned home after the king's sudden death, he was annihilated by the Emishi army. Since the position of minister bestowed by the king was linked to the succession of the clan leader's position, such actions can be seen as a struggle for clan leadership within the Soga clan, between the enlightened main family, which sought direct lineal succession, and Marise, which sought the traditional intra-generational succession.
