Its chemical formula is KAl( SO4 ) 2 · 12H2O or K2SO4 · Al2 ( SO4 ) 3 · 24H2O . Its specific gravity is 1.757. It is a regular octahedral, colorless crystal. When heated, it dissolves in water of crystallization (92°C). It dissolves well in water, and its aqueous solution is somewhat acidic. It is used as a mordant, pigment, sizing (to improve the water resistance of paper, etc.), tanning leather, water clarifier, medicine, etc. This is what is generally referred to as alum. It is precipitated by adding sulfuric acid after burning alum stone. → Burnt alum → Related topics Chrome alum (alum) | Alum (alum) Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
