Hammer beam

Hammer beam
Cantilever beams were used in the sophisticated rafter trusswork of late medieval England. They are short beams that protrude from the top of the wall into the room, with a rafter placed on top of a beam at the end. Usually, rafters are placed on top of the wall, but the hammer beam was invented to move these unsightly beams to a higher position, making the room appear higher and more open, but structurally it is weaker than normal rafters.
