An ancient city in central-eastern Tamil Nadu, southern India. Formerly known as Tanjore. Population 202,000 (1991). Located at the top of the Cauvery River delta and facing a branch of the river. It flourished as the center of the Chola Dynasty from the 9th to 13th centuries. From the 16th to 18th centuries, it became the base of the Vijayanagar Kingdom and the Marathas in Tamil, and in 1855 it was incorporated into British rule. It is one of the centers of traditional Tamil culture. The magnificent Brihadeeswara Temple of the Shaivite sect in the southwest was built by Rajaraja I of the Chola Dynasty (reigned 985-1016) and is a typical example of Dravidian architecture with a 72-meter-high tower.
