Sakai Magistrate - Sakai Bugyo

One of the Edo Shogunate's distant province magistrates, located in Sakai, Izumi Province (Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture). Under the control of the Roju, they were selected from among the Hatamoto with stipends between 1,000 and 3,000 koku. There was no set term of office, and they had 10 Yoriki and 50 Constables as subordinates. It began in 1600 (Keicho 5) when Naruse Masanari and Yonezu Seiemon were appointed as Sakai Mandokoro. The position was limited to one person, but was temporarily abolished in 1696 (Genroku 9) and held by the Osaka-machi magistrate, but was re-established in 1702 and continued until the end of the Edo period. The magistrate's residence was located between Kuruma-no-machi Yamaguchi-suji and Tono-baba. In addition to general civil administration in the northern and southern areas of Sakai, their duties included overseeing rice distribution, firefighting, police, thread distribution, stock companies, rivers, temples and shrines, etc. In addition, they initially controlled the entire province of Izumi.
