A legendary figure from Spain who was as prevalent in Europe as Faust. The legend of Don Juan is composed of two elements: the "seducer" and the "stone guest" who mocks the stone statues of people he has killed and invites them to a meal. There are various theories about the origins of these two elements, but the prototype of the "stone guest" is thought to be a legend scattered throughout Europe since the 14th century, in which "if you kick a skull lying by the roadside, a ghost will appear and invite the ghost to a meal." The model for the "seducer" is thought to be a man named Don Juan Tenorio, who frequented the court of Pedro I the Cruel (reigned 1350-69) of Spain, but neither of these has a solid historical basis.
