Leibowitz
Polish-born French music theorist, educator, conductor, and composer. Also known as Lebowitz. He studied violin in his hometown of Warsaw, and moved to Paris in 1926. He studied under Schoenberg in Berlin from 1930 to 1933, then under Webern in Vienna, and later studied orchestration under M. Ravel and conducting under Monteux in Paris. After World War II, he introduced the works of the Second Viennese School (Second Viennese School) including Schoenberg to France through his conducting activities, and published works such as Schoenberg and His School (1947) and Introduction to Twelve-tone Music (1949). He influenced Boulez and others through his wide-ranging activities, such as serving as a conductor and lecturer at the Darmstadt International Summer Course in Contemporary Music from 1949, and played an important role in the trends of European composition up until the 1950s. →Twelve-tone Music/Henze
