Austrian diplomat and orientalist. Born in Graz, he studied at the School of Oriental Languages in Vienna and worked as an interpreter for various Oriental languages, later becoming a court interpreter, a baron, and president of the Academy. In addition to Western languages, he was fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, and left behind a large number of translations and writings. In particular, his 10-volume History of the Ottoman Empire (1827-32) remains problematic in terms of criticism of the historical sources, but is still useful today as a general history based on abundant Turkish historical sources. オーストリアの外交官，東洋学者。グラーツに生まれ，ウィーンの東洋語学校に学び，東洋諸国語の通訳として活躍，後に宮廷通訳官，男爵，学士院長となった。西洋諸国語に加え，アラビア語，ペルシア語，トルコ語にも通じ，多数の翻訳･著作を残した。とりわけ，《オスマン帝国史》10巻(1827‐32)は，史料批判に問題を残すが，豊富なトルコ語史料に基づく通史として現在でも有用である。【鈴木董】
