1774‐1856 Austrian diplomat and orientalist. Born in Graz, he studied at the School of Oriental Languages in Vienna and worked as an interpreter for various Oriental languages, later becoming a court interpreter, a baron, and president of the Academy. In addition to Western languages, he was fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, and left behind a large number of translations and writings. In particular, his 10-volume History of the Ottoman Empire (1827-32) remains problematic in terms of criticism of the historical sources, but is still useful today as a general history based on abundant Turkish historical sources.
