After receiving his education in his hometown, he went to the capital, Bagharshapat (now Echmiadzin), where he served first as a civil servant and then as a soldier in the court of Armenian King Khosrow III. He was already fluent in Greek, Persian, and Syriac. However, he became a recluse and engaged in Christianization activities in the Nakhchivan region.
