Also known as the Magellanic Clouds. An irregular galaxy visible to the naked eye in the Southern Hemisphere. Not visible from Japan. There are two, one large and one small, the Large Magellanic Cloud (Doradus, symbol LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (Tucson, symbol SMC). It is the closest galaxy, located 170,000 light years away, and forms a triple galaxy with the Milky Way. In February 1987, a supernova appeared in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and neutrinos from this supernova were detected by equipment at Kamioka Mine in Gifu Prefecture. It was discovered by Spanish and Portuguese navigators in the late 15th century, and was named after F. Magellan.

マゼラン星雲とも。南半球で肉眼で見える不規則銀河。日本からは見えない。大小２個あり，大マゼラン銀河（かじき座，記号LMC）と，小マゼラン銀河（きょしちょう座，記号SMC）からなる。銀河としてはもっとも近い17万光年の距離にあり，銀河系とともに三連銀河を形成。1987年２月大マゼラン銀河中に超新星が出現し，岐阜県神岡鉱山にある装置でこの超新星からのニュートリノが検出された。15世紀末スペイン，ポルトガルの航海者が発見，F.マゼランにちなんで命名。
