Japanese: 和田峠 - わだとうげ

A pass on the old Nakasendo road, located in the northwest of Kirigamine, Nagano Prefecture, on the border between Shimo-Suwa Town and Wada Village, Chiisagata County (now Nagano Town). At 1,531m above sea level, it is the highest point on the road. It was temporarily weakened by the opening of the railway, but now National Route 142 runs through it via a tunnel, making it an important route connecting northern and southern Shinshu. Hoshigato is also famous as a source of obsidian, the raw material for stone tools in the Stone Age. During the Edo period, it was the most difficult part of the Nakasendo road, and in 1724 permission was given to set up wholesalers and rest areas. Later, the Eitai Jinba Shiseisho (Eternal Human and Horse Handling Station) was established, where bonfires were lit during the winter and rice porridge was provided to travelers and fodder for cattle and horses.

長野県霧ヶ峰北西部，下諏訪町と小県(ちいさがた)郡和田村（現・長和町）の境にある旧中山道の峠。標高1531mで道中の最高点。鉄道の開通で一時衰えたが，現在は国道142号がトンネルで通じ，北信と南信を結ぶ重要路線となっている。星ヶ塔は石器時代に石器の原材である黒曜石の産地としても著名。江戸時代，中山道最大の難所で，1724年には問屋や休憩所の設置が許可された。のち冬季間に焚火をたき，旅人に粥，牛馬に飼葉を施す永代人馬施行所が始められた。
