A pass on the old Nakasendo road, located in the northwest of Kirigamine, Nagano Prefecture, on the border between Shimo-Suwa Town and Wada Village, Chiisagata County (now Nagano Town). At 1,531m above sea level, it is the highest point on the road. It was temporarily weakened by the opening of the railway, but now National Route 142 runs through it via a tunnel, making it an important route connecting northern and southern Shinshu. Hoshigato is also famous as a source of obsidian, the raw material for stone tools in the Stone Age. During the Edo period, it was the most difficult part of the Nakasendo road, and in 1724 permission was given to set up wholesalers and rest areas. Later, the Eitai Jinba Shiseisho (Eternal Human and Horse Handling Station) was established, where bonfires were lit during the winter and rice porridge was provided to travelers and fodder for cattle and horses. → Related article Shimo-Suwa [town] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
