Italian politician and political theorist. Born in Piedmont. A member of the Society of Jesus, he served as secretary and tutor to Cardinal Borromeo and the Duke of Savoy (House of Savoy). During this time, he conducted extensive research into the circumstances and governing methods of various countries, and wrote works on politics and economics, including Discourse on the Reason of State (1589). At the time, his Discourse on the Reason of State attracted public attention as the first systematic work on the reason of state. In the midst of the Catholic Reformation, he used this work to criticize the anti-religious and secular starting point of Machiavelli's arguments, while at the same time trying to absorb as much of the new content of Machiavelli's presentation of governing techniques as possible.

イタリアの政治家，政治理論家。ピエモンテ地方生れ。イエズス会に属し，ボロメオ枢機卿およびサボイア公(サボイア家)に秘書官，教育係として仕えた。この間，各国の事情や統治方策についての研究を重ね，《国家理性論》(1589)をはじめとする政治や経済についての著作を残した。彼の《国家理性論》は当時，国家理性についての最初の体系的作品として世間の注目を集めた。カトリック宗教改革のなかで彼はこの作品によってマキアベリの議論の反宗教的･世俗的出発点を批判する一方，マキアベリの提示した統治術の新しい内容を可能なかぎり吸収しようとした。
