...All three species are seen passing through the coastal waters of Japan twice a year, in spring and autumn, but the number is greater in spring. The great skua ( Catharacta skua maccormicki ) (illustration) is about 60 cm long. Its whole body is dark brown with white areas on its wings, making it very conspicuous when flying.
