Epaminondas - Epaminondas (English spelling)

Epaminondas - Epaminondas (English spelling)

A general and politician of Thebes in ancient Greece. In 371 BC, when Sparta demanded the dissolution of the Boeotian League, of which Thebes was the leader, on the pretext of the Treaty of Antalcidas, he refused and instead fought the invading Spartan army at Leuctra, winning a victory with his own invented diagonal battle tactics. The following year, he launched an expedition to the Peloponnese, liberating Arcadia and Messenia from Sparta. In 364 BC, he attempted to advance by sea against Athens, and worked with his close friend Pelopidas to establish hegemony over Thebes. However, since Thebes did not have decisive military or financial power, its hegemony was due to his personal skills, and after his death in the Battle of Mantinea in 362 BC, its power rapidly declined.
