Khanty (English spelling)

Formerly called the Ostyak people, they call themselves the Khanty, which means "people." They are an ethnic group that lives in the Ob and Irtysh river basins in Western Siberia, with a population of about 22,500. The majority of them live in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. They belong to the Uralic racial type, a mixture of Caucasoid and Mongoloid. Their main occupations are fishing and hunting, but reindeer breeding is practiced in the Ob River basin in the north, and barley cultivation is also practiced in the Irtysh River basin in the south. They have much in common with the Mansi in terms of language, culture, and social organization. In particular, both are referred to as "Obi-Ugric" in documents, and are known to have had clans, clan organizations, totemistic ideas, shamanism, and bear festivals. During the Soviet era, they were organized into sovkhozes and kolkhozes.
