1899‐1976 A poet from Bengal, India. A Muslim. He lived in poverty from his childhood. During World War I, he volunteered for the Bengal regiment, and began to write poetry and stories in earnest while in Karachi. What made him famous was the long poem "Bipalabī" (The Rebel), published in 1921 after his return to India. His first collection of poems, "Agnibīṇā" (1922), which included this poem, foreshadowed the arrival of modern Bengali poetry, which would flourish in the 1930s. His representative collections of poems include "Biṣer Bāṅśi" (1924), "Sāmyabādī" (The Equalist), and "Chāyānaṭ" (both 1925). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
