Chihuahua (English spelling)

Chihuahua (English spelling)
The capital of Chihuahua State in northwestern Mexico. It is located in the center of the state, surrounded by mountains on the eastern edge of the Madre del Occidental mountain range, in a valley about 1,420m above sea level that opens to the north. The city was settled by the Spanish as early as the 16th century, but was founded in 1709 and flourished as a mining town throughout the colonial period. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), it was occupied twice by the United States Army. Today, it prospers as a mining center and a commercial and industrial center in the cattle ranching region. There are factories for metals, synthetic fibers, lumber, food processing, and more. The city is home to the Basilica of St. Francis, a typical example of 18th century Mexican architecture, a monument to M. Hidalgo y Costilla, a leader of the Mexican independence movement who was executed in the city, and the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (1954). It is a key transportation point in northern Mexico, where the north-south highway and railway from the border town of Ciudad Juarez to Mexico City and the east-west railway intersect in the city. Population: 530,487 (1990 estimate).
