He was the head lama of the Buryat people of the Transbaikal region (now the Republic of Buryatia in the Russian Federation). Lamaism was introduced to the Buryat people in the early 18th century, and spread rapidly throughout the entire Transbaikal region about half a century later. In order to control the Lamaist world, the Imperial Russian government appointed the lama Zayyaev as the head of the Transbaikal region's Lamaists in 1764, giving him the title of Pandita Hamborama. From this point on, successive Pandita Hamboramas were appointed by the Imperial Russian government (and from the mid-19th century by the Russian Tsar), and by the beginning of the 20th century, eight generations had been appointed.
