1871‐1948 French scholar of comparative literature. He lectured on comparative literature at the Sorbonne, and is considered to be one of the founders of the genre along with Valdansperger and Hazard. His book Comparative Literature (1931) had a wide-ranging influence as a commentary on comparative literature. His History of Modern European and American Literature (1946) is known as a representative literary history from the perspective of comparative literature.
