French scholar of comparative literature. He lectured on comparative literature at the Sorbonne, and is considered to be one of the founders of the genre along with Valdansperger and Hazard. His book Comparative Literature (1931) had a wide-ranging influence as a commentary on comparative literature. His History of Modern European and American Literature (1946) is known as a representative literary history from the perspective of comparative literature. His other important work is Pre-Romanticism, published between 1924 and 1930, and revised and expanded between 1947 and 1948.

フランスの比較文学者。ソルボンヌで比較文学を講じ，バルダンスペルジェ，アザールとならんで，このジャンルの創始者とされる。《比較文学》(1931)は，比較文学の解説書として，広範な影響を及ぼした。《近代ヨーロッパ･アメリカ文学史》(1946)は，比較文学の視点に立つ代表的な文学史として知られる。ほかに重要な著書として，《前ロマン主義》は1924年から30年にかけて刊行され，47年から48年にかけて改訂増補された。
