Spacelab (English spelling)

Japanese: スペースラブ（英語表記）spacelab

A manned space laboratory for conducting various experiments in space. It was developed by the European Space Agency in response to NASA's invitation to participate in the Space Shuttle program. It consists of a pressurized module (laboratory) that is sealed and has a diameter of 4.2 meters and is kept at a constant pressure inside, and a pallet (platform) that is exposed to space. Spacelab will be loaded into the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle and transported into orbit, where it will conduct material experiments, life science experiments, and other experiments in space.

宇宙空間で各種の実験を行なう有人宇宙実験室。 NASAのスペースシャトル計画への参加呼びかけにこたえ，ヨーロッパ宇宙機関が開発を行なった。その構成は，密閉型で直径 4.2mの内部が一定圧力に保たれる与圧モジュール (実験室) と，宇宙空間にさらされるパレット (プラットフォーム) から成る。スペースラブはスペースシャトルの荷物室に搭載されて軌道に運ばれ，宇宙空間において，材料実験，ライフサイエンス実験等を行なう。
