Kaigane - Kaigane

...The Yami people who live on Lanyu (Red Head Island) off the east coast of Taiwan, in addition to farming, engage in diving and fishing in the good fishing grounds of the coral reefs surrounding the island, using a hook-shaped fishing tool called lalang (about 60 cm long), which is very similar to the Japanese "fish kakeki". In Japan, the iron lever-shaped spatula used to collect abalone is called isogane in many regions, kaigane, fugusé, nomi, etc., and in some regions it is called nasashi (fish sashimi), and there are regional differences in its shape. Diving goggles became popular in the 1880s, and the single-lens type called hanamegane, which incorporates the nose and is widely used today, is convenient and has brought about a significant improvement in efficiency.
