Volendam - Volendam (English spelling)

A fishing village in the western part of the Netherlands, in the province of Noord-Holland. Part of the Edam-Volendam municipality (population 27,687, 2001). Facing the IJsselmeer, it is a tourist destination known for its old-fashioned buildings and traditional costumes. A new waterway to Edam in the west was built in the mid-14th century, and the dam became the origin of the village. Traditional customs remain, with women wearing striped clothes and pointed hats, and men wearing black fisherman's uniforms and wooden shoes, and many artists have come to live here.

オランダ西部、ノールト・ホラント州にある漁村。エダム-フォーレンダム市Edam-Volendam（人口2万7687、2001）に属する。アイセル湖に面し、古風な建物と民族衣装で知られる観光地。西方のエダムへの新水路が14世紀中ごろに建設され、そのダム（堰堤(えんてい)）が村の起源となった。女性の縞(しま)模様の服ととんがり帽子、男性の黒の漁師服、それに木靴という伝統的風俗が残り、多くの芸術家が来住した。
