Abbreviation of public house. Originally it meant an inn or hotel, but came to mean an izakaya or bar. Originally in England, inns and taverns were separate things, but in the days when transportation was underdeveloped, there was a need for places to provide beds for travelers along with food and alcohol, so places that served both inns and izakayas sprang up everywhere. This is the origin of the public house, but in the 17th century, pubs came to mean places that sold coffee and alcohol, especially beer and wine. Later, high-class bars were called salons or saloon bars, and pubs came to mean bars for the masses. Some establishments have two entrances, one for the pub and one for the saloon. Japanese pubs became popular around 1960 (Showa 35), and are a combination of a bar and a restaurant.
