A town in western Nevada, USA. It is located in the Virginia Mountains, 26 km southeast of Reno. The town was founded in 1859 with the discovery of the Comstock Lode, a gold and silver deposit, and prospered as a boom town, with the population peaking at 25,000 in the mid-1870s. Victorian-style mansions lined the streets, and Mark Twain worked as a reporter for the town's newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise. With the decline of the mining industry in the 1880s, it became a ghost town, and today it is visited by many tourists. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
