Einstein-de Haas effect

A phenomenon in which mechanical rotational motion occurs in a sample due to magnetization of a magnetic material. It was discovered in 1915 by A. Einstein and Wander Johannes de Haas (1878-1960). If a rod of magnetic material is suspended, wound around it in a coil, and magnetized ⊿ M by passing an electric current through it, a change of ⊿ J _mag occurs in the angular momentum of the magnetic carrier, given by ⊿ M = γ ⊿ J _mag (γ is the magnetic angular momentum ratio). Since the total momentum of the magnetic material does not change, is given as the change in angular momentum of the rotational motion of the entire sample, and therefore a mechanical torque acts on the sample.

磁性体が磁化したことによりその試料に力学的回転運動が生ずる現象。1915年，A.アインシュタインとド･ハースWander Johannes de Haas(1878‐1960)によって発見された。磁性体の棒をつり下げ，これにコイルを巻いて電流を通じて磁化⊿Mを生ぜしめれば，磁気の担い手のもつ角運動量には，　⊿M＝γ⊿J_magで与えられる変化⊿J_magが生ずる(γは磁気角運動量比)。磁性体の全運動量は変わらないから，は試料全体の回転運動の角運動量変化として与えられ，したがって試料には力学的なトルクが働く。
