A city in central Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1950. It occupies the area between the left bank of the midstream Ishikari River and the Sorachi Mountains, and is served by the Hakodate Main Line and the Do-o Expressway. The area was developed by Tondenhei soldiers, and the Ishikari Plain produces a lot of rice. The central city has the surrounding rural areas as its backdrop, and commercial and service industries have developed. The mountainous area in the east was a coal mining area, but by 1973 the mines had closed one after another. Since then, the city has actively sought to attract businesses, and an industrial complex has been formed, with factories producing food, textiles, plastics, electrical equipment, and more. In November 2002, Miyajima-numa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. 277.69 km2 . Population: 26,034 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
