A general term for the languages spoken in most of New Guinea and in the surrounding islands of Halmahera, Timor, New Ireland, and New Britain. There are several hundred languages, and they are of a different lineage from the neighboring Austronesian language family, but there are various theories about the classification of Papuan languages and their mutual lineages, and research is ongoing. A common feature is the "subject-object-predicate" word order. ◇Papuan in English. Source: Kodansha Encyclopedia of the World's Major Languages |
