His major works include Krizis zapadnoi filosofii (74), La Russie et l'Eglise Universelle (89, Paris), and Opravdanie dobra (94-97). He was also famous as a poet who sang of a mystical encounter with Christ, which had a strong influence on later Symbolists.

Solov'ëv, Sergei Mikhailovich

Born: May 17, 1820, Moscow
[Died] October 16, 1879. A Moscow Russian historian. Father of philosopher VS Solovyov. After graduating from Moscow University, he studied in France and Germany. After returning to Russia, he lectured on Russian history at Moscow University, and in 1847 became a professor there. His view of history differed from NM Karamzin's subjectivist view of history, and he argued that history unfolds according to a set law. He saw the state as the best expression of human life, and emphasized its role in Russian history. He also highly praised the significance of the reforms of Peter the Great, and took a pro-Western position. His extensive research achievements marked a period in Russian historiography, and had a great influence on subsequent historians such as VO Klyuchevsky and SF Platonov. His main work, Istoriya Rossii a drevneishikh vremën (A History of Russia from Ancient Times) (29 volumes, 1851-79), remains one of the best general histories of Russia to this day.
