[Born] April 10, 1755, Meissen Died July 2, 1843. German physician in Paris. Founder of homeopathy. Studied medicine in Leipzig and Vienna, and opened a practice in Leipzig in 1789. While translating W. Cullen's medical book Materia Medica into German, he noticed that when quinine was administered to healthy people, symptoms that seemed to be identical to those of sick people who needed quinine administration appeared, and he came up with the idea of homeopathic therapy, a therapy that induces symptoms similar to those of the disease with small doses of a drug (1796). He moved to Cöthen at the invitation of the Grand Duke of Anhalt-Cöthen, and later moved to Paris, where he continued his practice, and died at the age of 88. His main work, Reine Arzneimittellehre (6 volumes, 1811), is the foundational text of homeopathy.
