Died July 2, 1843. German physician in Paris. Founder of homeopathy. Studied medicine in Leipzig and Vienna, and opened a practice in Leipzig in 1789. While translating W. Cullen's medical book Materia Medica into German, he noticed that when quinine was administered to healthy people, symptoms that seemed to be identical to those of sick people who needed quinine administration appeared, and he came up with the idea of homeopathic therapy, a therapy that induces symptoms similar to those of the disease with small doses of a drug (1796). He moved to Cöthen at the invitation of the Grand Duke of Anhalt-Cöthen, and later moved to Paris, where he continued his practice, and died at the age of 88. His main work, Reine Arzneimittellehre (6 volumes, 1811), is the foundational text of homeopathy.

ドイツの医師。ホメオパシーの創始者。ライプチヒとウィーンで医学を学び，1789年にライプチヒで開業した。 W.カレンの医書『薬物学』 Materia Medicaをドイツ語に翻訳しているとき，キニーネを健康人に与えると，キニーネ投与を必要としている病人が示す症状と同一と思われる症状が現れる事実に気づき，少量の薬物投与で病気と同様の症状を引起す療法，つまりホメオパシー療法の発想にいたった (1796) 。アンハルト・ケーテン大公の招きを受けてケーテンに移住し，のちにパリに転住し同地で診療を続け，88歳で死亡。主著『薬物学』 Reine Arzneimittellehre (6巻，1811) はホメオパシーの基礎文献。
